UPPER HUTT TOWN BOARD.

The first of the monthly meetings of the 'Upper- Hutt 'Town Board was held last; night at the "Town Board offices, Mr. Job Harrison, chairman/presiding. ' Mr. Jacob Geange attended and ex-, pressed : regret. .for •• having disturbed . a previous meeting of the board. His apology was accepted. Mr: Geange.also notified his intention of discontinuing proceedings against the board : for the recovery- of oOs;, "alleged: .to. be- due to him, arid; on his 'admitting liability for certain vehicle licenses, the- clerk was directed to discontinue the set-off claim filed by the board. Mr. L'ay; a local storekeeper,. wrote complaining that. the outgoing . board had only patronised him to the'extent of 195.-: 4d. The treasurer produced l threo. vouchers which alone nearly trebled' the sum quoted. It was resolved to acknowledge the,letter. : ' •In the. matter of straightening the old New Zealand Company's .road-line connecting. Henry" Street with . Ebdentown. Road, it. was .resolved to inform Mrs. .Clark, of;Petorie,:and Mrs. Lyster, of Wellington, that the' board were prepared to consent to. the exchanges of land necessary on : the . application guaranteeing . that' the legal costs and surveys .and .other charges; of both parties would be. paid by them. . Southee/be called upon to at. once remove a fence" which' lie has ■ erected upon the board's pound and sanitary reserve, ti the matter of possible accumulation of. rubbish in 'backyards, etc., reported by the inspector of nuisances .as likely to be detrimental to health, the committee recommended that the inspector of nuisances shall wherever ; he. finds rubbish awsumiilating.; notify ..the"' occupier 'of the premises of,'the. provisions of the:by-law on the subject, and request' an immediate discontinuance of the .nuisance.—Adopted.;'. . , ; The Works Committee .reported that it- had instructed the clerk to issue instructions/for the removal of trees at Trentham, to connect the Moonshine Road approach with the crown of the main road/and to carry out the new railway approach by : work... .'He was ' also directed to. levels of the main road between the post office and Pine -Avenue with a - "view , to grading to- take the' water-.from the' vicinity of. the hotel to .Pine Avenue. .' The report, was adopted. '

■ Tho clerk's report on works'completed and in progress was., adopted. The, completion of the/removal, .of trees , at Trentham' was directed to be continued conditional upon Mr. Kearney indemnifying the board,'against claims^'for damage to fences resulting from tree-falling operations. . The 'Treasurer reported the bank overdraft as £144 2s. Id., plus Bank interest on overdraft not : yet advised. Over £917 revenue was collectable during the ensuing six months, including subsidies/of which total at least £530 would be available for road works. During the first six months of the financial year just concluded, the old board expended the sum of ;£352 on road works •and river protection: : The Works Committee was instructed to inspect the following localities, with power to act as neededKellow Street, M'Lean Street, Melrose Street, Bentiuck Street, Murray-Campbell Street, King Street, Pino Avenue, and Gibbons's Road.. ,

In the matter of infectious disease treatment. Commissioner R. H. Webb was appointed to confer with delegates from other local bodies and report to the board on the subject matter of Dr. Vnlintine's letter.

• The Building Committee's report was referred back: with a direction to take into consideration the question of immediately improving the office accommodation if only for the next few months.

In the matter of alleged infraction of building by-laws, -it was resolved to write to Mr. G. L. Lay and notify him of breaches of the by-laws, and ask him to rectify the matter. » It was unanimously resolved to call upon owners to remove obstructing fences from the Wakatiko Road lino, within sixty days "from date of receipt of registered notice.
