ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
DIED FROM DIPHTHERIA. J An inquest was.held at the Magistrate's Court yesterday morning by Mr. W. G, Biddell, S.M., concerning tho death ot Gwilym George Rico Richardson, who died suddenly at his .parent's residence,, Grant Road, early on .Wednesday morning. Sub-Inspector. Norwood represented the polico. • •';- '; ■' .'..'; - Evidence adduced at the inquest showed ■that deceased was twelve years o£ age, and had been attending the Normal School, ■ Thorndon, until. September- 21, ■ when he, complained of feeling ill, find was'kept, at home. He was confined to'bed almost continuously until the time of On Tuesday he was breathing with dim-.' eulty. At 9 p.m. that day ho complained' of feeling sick and vomited; A doctor' was' sent for' on Tuesday 1 evening,■ but was out )A message, ["'"however, was left for the doctor to come'when he' arrived home. In the - meantime the-lad complained of pain in the abdomen, became worse; and expired in his mother's arms at a quarter to. two' o'clock on Wednesday morning.. During the : period of illness deceased had not been able to take any- solid food. • .' .' •>..-... -Dr. W.' Kington. Fyffe stated that he had made a-post-mortem examination of the body, which was extremely, emaciated. There was no sign of. diphtheritic membrane in ■ the throat or; lungs, but the tonsils contained deep, crypts," which may at one time have.been ulcers. .Tn.a" suusequerit bacteriological, examination witness found the diphtheria' bacillus in the throat and in the ■ blood. The ■ cause of death was heart failure following-' diphtheria.' .: '..■'--' -,' A A verdict was-.returnefr in accordance with the medical testimony.
