He need not wear prison clothes, aii'd he occupies a separate cell, but has to keep it clean. He is served .with the ordinary, prison fare, but if he, likes he can have his meals sent to him from .outside. He is allowed, six houiis a day-forexercise-three, hours' in the morning and thiiee in' the-, afternoon—and , is allowed to receive visitors, once' every ■ day,' and to write one letter a day; also, he has the use of th« gaol library, or, if he prefers it, : ho can have books, sent' in ..to him from outside.' He is not obliged to work, tat if ho likes to volunteer, ho may be generally given some light.employment. A fine now school of modern. • design., recently erected by the. Wellington Education Board at Wadkanae, wns ! opened, yesterday on behalf of the board by Mr. A. W. Hogg, M.P. Besides the headmaster (Mr. C. Duncan) and Mr. Silvsster (representing ' the committee) there was a considerable number of parents and children, present. .The school is strongly built,; and comprises Two largo rooms with a wide central hall. One of the rooms contained a fine exhibition of cut flowers, and the other was embellished with works of art and a unique display of ■well-esccnted drawings in chalk and charcoal, ami most creditable specimens of penmanship.
