ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

INJURED BY AN EXPLOSION. Charles Brown, aped 11 years, whoso parents, rosido at Antico Street, Melrose,_ was admitted to tho hospital last evening, suffering from severe injuries to ■his right hand, and, after his admission to .tho institution, it was found necessary to amputate portion of tho thumb and three fingers of tho right hand. According to tho boy's story, tho. injuries were caused by the explosion of a "thing" which ho had obtained in the science class at school earlier in tho day. Sergeant Mathieson, of tho Newtown Police, on making inquiries at the school, .was informed that tho "thing" described by the injured boy was a harmless chemical substance, and a theory advanced by the, teachers is that the. lad may have been injured by. tho explosion of a cracker, bomb, or other piece of fireworks obtained from some of the other lads at the school. ■■"■.-

Young M'Grath, who is a.conductor on the trams; on which he- has been employed for • tho past five or six months, ,was changing' over the seats of a. car which had just left the Addington terminus shortly after five o'cldck. : The car was then 'going, between four./ and five miles an hour. It appears, that, in moving on tho footboard irom one part of.tho tram to another,, his head came'in contact with" one of the tramway poles. The ■concussion rendered him unconscious,and he fell back /clear, of the cor-.and sustained a ciit on the back of the. head. He, was'brought to- town, in the tram, taken to his home, and received, medical attention. Shortly.after nine o'clock ho re-' gained'consciousness.. .-' :-', , ; '■'
