EGMONT SASH AND DOOR FACTORY.

The Egmont Sash and Door Factory, owned by Mr. G. Syme, of Hawera, is the largest of its kind on the west coast of the largest sash and door factories of tho largest sash. and dor factories in Now Zealand. The premises in Hawera cover between . three and four acres of laud. In addition there is a depot at Stratford and sawmills at Huiroa, on the Stratford-Ongaruc line, and at 'Wait-angi. and Horopito on tho Main Trunk line. In all, tho firm cuts about 8,000,000 ft. of -timber annually, and fully one hundred men aro in constant employment at the various mills and yards. The present factory was established in. 1883, and, . six years later, was purchased by Mr.'Syine, who now controls the whole of the business, with his four 'sons, Walter, George, Norman, and James. .During the last thirteen years, the firm lias established cutting rights and mills at Midhirst, Douglas lload, Ngaire, Utiku, and Taihape. These mills have been all cut out, with the result, that every year tho firm has to go farther afield for its timber. Most of tho timber used is red pins, but- there is also' matai ami whito pine. In the last twenty-nno years, the present yards in Hawera have been increased about three aercE. The firm dors a. large amount of special work in connection with the dairy industry, and-turns out largo numbers of cream vats, butter-makprs, and churns. This work is effected by machinery, especially imported ,for the purpose. Jintter boxes are turned out the finished articlc at per second, such is the improvement, mad© of late years in labour-saving devices. In the past four years, Mr.. Symo has..made, something over 250,000 butter boxes. "The firm stocks something over 3,000,000 ft. of timber at the Hawera factory- A business of this description Js ' of almost inestimable benefit to Hawoia, and in every po&ible way it may bo • considered to be one of tho best managed and controlled in the Dominion. Mr. G. Syme, the owner, now leaves u good deal of its management to his sons. ' Mr. Walter Syme is practically 'manager of the concern, and lie has with nmi Messrs. James and Norman Syme.. Mr. G. Syme; jun., is in charge of the Waitangi sawmill, and has with him Mr. Blizzard, a well known and practical sawmillcr. Mr. F. .8. Tarrant is in charge at Horopito, Mr. G. Ford at.Huiroa, and Mr. G. Hunter, at tho Stratford depot. .

Gibson's Stables, owned by Mr. G. F. Gillandcrs, have the largest business of their kind of any inland town in 'New. Zealand.. The stables cover a quarter of an acre of land, and as many as 500 horses and 150 vehicles' have been put up at one time in a day.'"
