POLICE ADMINISTRATION.

Sir, —I would take it as a great favour to be permitted to draw the attention of tlioso ooncerned and the general public to tho very unsatisfactory state of affairs in connection with the Polico Department. They are fifty per cent, worse tlian when under Mr. Dinnie's supervision. As a result of the recent Nelson affair, of. which so much was written thereon in tho local paper, we find the smoothing-iron process adopted, and Sergeant Duggan con-, sequently transferred to.Port Chalmers. This is the same old dose repeated, as tho commission fully brought out, and so strongly dealt with by Mr. Bishop. But this business is simply a trifle compared with the Christchurch matter, whereby officers are charged with something very serious, which rumour hath it was brought about by a certain member of our Legislature. The question is a serious one, and if tliere has been a crime, will tho punishment fit it? It is rumoured that strong efforts. are being made to smother up the .matter. Well, Bir, I hope that this lotter will catch the oyes of Messrs. Taylor, Arnold, Wright, and Poole, M.P. s, and that thoy will at least defeat any attempt at "cloaking."

.We have now two examples of tho efficiency (?) of the .Force, and I believe if full inquiries were, made that matters generally throughout New Zealand are very sultry at the. present time. However, I hope that tho weighty and serious matter above referred to will be. thoroughly sifted and dealt with .on its full merits.—l am, etc., SCEPTIC. Wellington, June 29, 1910.
