Mr. Macdonald moved, and .Mr. Craigie , ; seconded, the Address-in-Reply, after which .'Mr.' Massey, Leader of the Opposition, entered upon a lengthy critic-, ism'., of the administration .-of the Government, together with then: legislative proposals, He was (it will hi) seen) par- ' ticularly. severe on the Native lands ■ and defence: administration; Other: important matters: to which he alluded were the land question, local govehi- . ment, and th&iKnyvett case. The Hon. : A. Ngata, who'followed Mr. Massey, confined his attention mostly to the Na-tive-land'question, avid endeavoured to . show that during tho past twenty years ' "hustle"; had been impossible. In, Mr. . Carroll ,(he said) New Zealand had had just" the- in the right place, as Minister in charge of the Department, for he was able by diplomacy to secure greater headway in the opening ' up of Native lands than could be obtained in any other .way. As the criticism of Mr. Massey on so many questions remained unanswered by the Government, it appeared as if members ' "Df the Opposition were not inclined to continue the debate, for no one on ; -f that - side of the House", evinced -any , disposition, to speak, but Mr. E. H. Taylor rose on behalf of tho Government, and so prevented the debate.from: falling: through.
