GARRISON OFFICERS' CLUB.

A meeting o£ the garrison officers was held at tho club room, at the Garrison Hall, pn Thursday evening, when a very instructive and interesting programme was carried.out. Captain Hall (active unattached list) gave an interesting lecture of the first battle of tho American Civil War—"Bull linn." The lecturer emphasised the importance of' training, organisation, and discipline, as it was tho absence of all these in the battle ho described that caused such a disaster to the Federal forces, and prevented the Confederates from achieving any great results from their victory. .

Major Matheson (O.C. College Cadets) then gave a short lecturo on the "Ballistics of Musketry."' Ho emphasised tho groat importance of every soldier being trained to look upon his riilo as a delicate instrument, to be treated with great care and attention, if the ballastic properties wero to be maintained. Lieut. Simeon (Territorial Force) gave a description of the various rifles in iise by tho different Powers, and showed the great superiority of the "Ross" (Canadian) rifle over all others as regards ballastic properties.' Captain Cowlcs (Adjutant to No. 1 Wellington Battalion Territorial Force) followed with a lecturetto on practical musketry training. His lecture was followed with great interest, and subsequently discussed. Tho result of the discussion showed that practice on the range.ut fixed targets at known distances was not practical battle training, and that range practieo was merely a preliminary to battle training or field practices. It was only by the latter that officers and men could learn their duties for war, ami ensure thorough training in fire control, and fire discipline. Lieut.-Colonel Campbell, V.D., presided, and about forty officers wero present. On Wednesday, July 0, the club will hold its next social.
