PERSONAL NOTES FROM LONDON.

Professor Gerald Leighton, of the Royal Dick Veterinary College, Edinburgh, who 13 a New Zealander, lately lectured before the Sanil.irv Society on the "chaotic" state of British meat inspection.
Mrs. L. Desborough and Miss I. 7. Desborough, her daughter, of Christchurch and Auckland, who have been in England since June. 1806, hope to return to New Zealand in September next by the Orient Line. Mi6s Desborough u'iil devote her remaining months here to the study of music.
.D. G. Macpherson, of Otago University and Loudon Hospital, played a great game for Scotland in the match against England, .in which the Englishmen won by li points to 5,. and carried off the Bugby championship for the first time for 18 years. ' Macphorson's work was splendid, and all the critics agree in praising his resourcefulness.
Mr. Eobert Allan, J.P., of South bridgt, has recently returned from a four months' visit to New Zealand, and is greatly impressed with the spending power, of the New Zeolanders, especially as evidenced by the large and busy drapers' shops in the principal towns. He considers, from statistics supplied by a well-known New Zealand politician, that the. spending power of the one million New Zealantlers is more than that of five times that population, in Scotland. \
The Rev. Albert Darell Tupper-Carey, who has just boon appointed Canon-Mi&. siouer of York Minster, will proceed to New Zealand on Juno 16 on a mission of help. He will be absent about three months, and on his return to England will take up bis appointment at York, devoting himself specially to the work of parochial and foreign missions, • The new Canon has. been Rector of Lowestoft for the past nine years. He was a cod.temporary of tho Archbishop of York it Oxford, where he graduated in 1887.
