Sydney, March 22. • Captain John Strac&an, a well-known master mariner, has commenced an. action against the proprietors of the "Sydney Morning Herald" claiming £5000' damages for libel. The alleged libel ■is contained in' statements said to havo been made by Doctor Inner, Consul-General for Germany, and published by the "Herald" on May 17 last.Tho article was headed "Alleged Kidnapping," and referred to the voyage of Captain Strachan in the ketch Envy, charging Straohan with recruiting natives of Tobi Island under promise to return tiiem to their homes, which promise, it is alleged, he failed to keep. Thi> article also alleged that Strachan had used efforts to induce the Tobi'lslanders to replace'the German flag with tho British. StraehanV ; reply ; is a "denial of the chargCE. He had taken Tobi boys for trips in the Envy of ■. their own free will to get knowledge of the worldbut had not .kidnapped'or- recruited them. Hβ also . denies tie- flag ■ inoident. .' . . • '.!■■■.
