FOUND ON THE CARS.

' Ifa person loses a- purse. or bag or pocket-book in a tramcar,i and the idea to inquire for the same at the lost property office o( the Tramways De-partment-does not oocur to him, it has .in the past meant good-bye.- to the article ■ in- question,- even if the name and address; of the owner are inscribed within,. or, .there are papers that easily lead ;to : identification... \ - When an article left-in a tramcar is .handed into the office, -particulars of its contents are noted, and a label is attached to it bearing the number corresponding to, the one in the lost property book'. These labels, however', are destroyed just prior to the annual sale of lost property. At Friday's sale some of the ' purchasers were surprised to find tho names; and, in some cases, the addresses of the owners,/.written inside, and it struck them , that, 'it was curious that the Tramways Department, did not make an effort—a very little effort would be required—to return such lost goods at once to prevent needless worry and anxiety en the part of the owners. This has not been done in the past ; though a purse" or' pocketbook may contain bills, papers, and cards indicating precisely and beyond all manner of doubt who the owner is uo . attempt, has been made to restore such property. • It is satisfactory to learn on inquiry that this system is, .to be .abandoned, and in future any case wbiere an article found on the cars is inscribed with a name, or l a name and address, or where papers, cards, or accounts indicate the identity of the owner, a postcard is .to be sent to the person at'once giving information. aa to the find. On calling at the office, the person will be asked. to describe the/article, and on payment of the trifling expense incurred, .the lost goods will be restored. It is hoped .that by this means many articles that afe flow sacrificed at the annual sale of lost property will find ■ their rightfui owners. "
