Speaking to a Dominion reporter on Saturday the Hon; Dr. Findlay (Minister for Justice) stated that it was proposed to use tie new prison at Inveroargill as the South , Island prison reformatory in the meantime. He.mentioned that splendid reformatory work along some, of the lines to be followed by the reformatory farm scheme was being carried out in the southern centre. During the past few years, vegetable gardening : had been undertaken by prisoners there with results highly satisfactory from every point of view. Each prisoner had an acre for his own speoiat cultivation, and it had been found that the prisoners took a keen interest in the work, vying with each other in their endeavours to secure the best results. It was intended to extend the reformatory farm scheme at Invercargill and to complete the preliminary work in connection with the North Island farm as eaxly as possible. "TVlat I am anxious to do," added Dr. Findlay, "is to see that young _ men who fixid their way into gaol will be fitted to take up positions on farms. It would be a good thing if this could be done in the case of wiat I may call our city 'wastrels'. I should like to see post prison supervision inaugurated on the same lines as, are followed undor tie Borstal system which has been adopted in England. This and other matters will be the subject of legislation which I hop© will be passed during the coming session."
