■ THE. P. AND 0. SERVICE. Regarding tie , oxtensiori of the P. arid 0. service to Auckland, the Auckland "Herald" says ;-Although it cannot yet be ascertained whether the company will continue the service after the third steamer has called next , month. It is believed that tho trial is. ijuite satisfactory. ' The first boat (the Malwa) brought 164 passengers and took 106 away, the Mongolia brought about 70, and carries about m> on the.retnrn trip.' .These bookings are. considered satisfactory by Captain- Preston, who explained that. the-.weather hid been very rough on tao Australian: coast before the Mongolia sailed, and some whd had booked did not travel. He had no douht that had the weather been fine many more,, would havo come from Australia. Mr. (Jomors, of the , Auckland agency, also'considers that the patronage extended -to the company has been very good. He has no advice as to what other Eteamors will come on to Auckland, but thinks it very prob-' able that, even if the steamers do not run to New Zealand during tho winter, the service will be renewed during the busy seasos. :.'-■■■.•: ■ ..■■■. .-' ■ ■■

A notice to' this Gazette states that it has been reported that it. is be. coming a common practice to take vessels through tho Frorioh Pass against the stream. Thie is 8, highly dangerous action, and ia Ukoly to terminate oventa»lly in » serious disaster.. Masters of vessels are therefore cautioned against this practice. Not only has it been found that vessels will sometimes not, answer their helm owing to the strong-tide acting on their bow, but there Is α-ereat danger of -meeting another vosSol coming from an opposite direction, and not being able to seo one another in sufficient time to avoid a collision. As Nelson is now able to be worked at any state of tide by the local Stcamors the temptation to do this is all the greater, hence tho need of this warding. • .- *
