':■ ! ."..'::\Masterton, ; March. 18. . 601d : ,-Bird .'.-jras"'- .withdrawn' i'roni the Hurdles,, leaving three runners. ; Kelso and Pakau; were, evenly backed, but the. exhibition given by the latter, mare did not justify■;the support accorded her. It was', 0n1y..; her second race, over, sticks. Kelso; was..in;front fromrstart to finish. Millpond had', .blen .close up , .'to.'.'Kelsp for a;mile when.he gave in, and nearly came'dowa .at>the" last fence. .\ ; "A very'hot''favourite, Naumai, was de-feated-in- th'e ; Telephone Handicap. The Conqueror gelding has--lOst-61b/ on his back, and he had.beaten ,a.good field at Woodrille : with a pound more to'carry. It appears that,-since 1 he.:hus been away from-; home,; he -has ■ done- very poorly. He'began smartly as usiial,--but, after, three, furlongs, he .commenced to . lose way, and' then tailed off. Waiata was very. ■'unfortunate- not- to -win, ,'as his jockey; allowed Liza to, come, up on the inside. After , being first' into the straight theTupuhi gelding was only, beaten by a; head.-;:, ■--. .' .'.- •'.. ■■ '. _ ... .'• ~ 'For. the Hack Scurry, the Hutt-tfaiu-ed Gold Top, and Merrie Emerald were dbout evenly '.back.; The field generally was;a very poor one. /Gold Top gotaway with, a. good. break, and,. entering the straight, 1 she was olear of the field, but Bhe stopped badly, and Morrie Emerald won comfortably at the finish..."■"-.. .-.

There was very■ little difference;.between Wai Ariki arid Aotea' in favouritism for, the, High-weight Handicap. Wai Ariki'should have been a good favourite .as his Hawera form was very, convincing, and in the handicap ho was treated very;;-weld, being only_ two pounds above the minimum. Wai A"riki and Canadian were the leaders down the.back stretch, with-Aotea on .their .heels. Wai Ariki came into the "straight with a good lead ■ and'.won. easily. ■■'- •. ■■'■-'■■. ■■,-."■'.'■■■'■ - -

Public.opinion was divided as,to which Tras,..the' best investment in -the big handicap, .and the first four.favourites were evenly'backed.. First: Consul led at the start,;. followed by Ballarat- and, Aberra-tion,-with- Tai toko and -Iranui in the roar,.and Lawn Rose tailed oS with Eiflemaid. At the turn into the straight Iranui, and Taitoko closed up, and-the leaders soon fell back. Sunbonnet' was - fortunate enough to ■ get o clear , run< on "the rails, while Iranui .had to go round. This apparently made all' the difference, and the little mare ■won easily. Iranui had to bo hard ridden to beat, Tailoko. .

The Railway Handicap was another even.betting race: Lace Collar as usual raced to the front, but she was done with at .'.tie turn, arid llerrie Land, who had been, lying second the whole way, then came, on and won very easily by half a dozen lengths. Curator, the favourite, ould -only finish a poor third. Succes:on was fourth'.

''The final Welter Handicap was a good race,. the. finish being very, chsov iliscast and: Laius carried on the running to the turn. Aboriginal was on their quarters, 'and then came tho two favourites. Helarian was the first to move up, and Marehgo moved after him. In a good finish Hilarian -won by half a length. Laius-.was fourth.' • ■ ■ ....•-■

Hinekorangj was the first choice of the" backers in the Telegraph Handicap and good money was also fortfeiomin" for Kina, Aimwell, and Leahora. The lastnamed delayed tho start considerably by misbehaviour, Kina was ■ first away while the favourite dwelt , slightly, and then when settling .down gov chopped out ■badly.. Curator joined Kina in the run across the bend, and then Hinekorangi ran up to them. In the straight

Aimwell came very fast, and passed all but Curator, who won very easily. The good showing of tho winner was a great improvement on his earlier form when he ran third to Memo Land. MANAWATU R.C.
