Zealandia Hall was well filled last night, when the annual national concert in connection with St. Patrick's Church was held. The programme submitted was a first-class one, most of the items being encored. An orchestra,' led by Mr. W. I'. Ward, played a couple of selections on Irish national airs : very, charmingly; Miss O'Brien was the lady ..vocalist, and had to respond to an encore for her rendering of "My Mary with the Curling > Hair. Messrs.. G. C. Keeble;and- J. T. Eodgers also weTe. encored for their songs, "Oft to Philadelphia" and "Terence's FarciWell," The solo instrumentalists were Miss Mary Ward (violin), Miss Rawlins, L.T.C.L., and Mr. P..8. Johnstone (violoncello), all of whom had' to repeat their items. ; Miss Blandford gave dramatio. recitations most . effectively, while Mr. Eadie provided the humorous element lvith. monologues, and on ' each occasion had to respond to double: encores. Concerted vocal numbers were given by Miss Pegden, Mrs. Broad, and Messrs. Jieeble-and Kodgers. Miss O'Dpnovan.danced an Irish jig in fine. Btylo. The accompaniments were played by Misses Eawlinsand Ward, Mrs. iiodgers, and Mr. Gunter. At the . conclusion of the concert a presentation of a puree of sixty sovereigns and an illuminated address was made to Father O'Bierne, who has been transferred to New. Plymouth. The address was tho handicraft of Sister Mary Bernard, and is a beautiful and artistic piece, of work. .Mr. W. T. Ward made the presentation, and spoke is eulogistic terms, of the great work performed by Father O'Bierno during his two and a half years' residence here. ''. The Manawatu Philosophical Society held its first meeting of the current session last night, when there was a.good attendance,, and- Mr.. W; F.- Durward, president, occupied the chair. The secretary read a paper by Mr. W. W. Smith, F.E.A.S., a former curator of reserves in Palmerston, on "The New Zealand Saddeblack," and Mr. D. Sinclab, C.E., gave a most interesting paper on "Education Among the Early Maoris." At the next meeting of the. society the Hon. Dr. Findlay will give a lecture on "Legal Liberty." ,■',.'■ ... A quarterly summoned meeting of the Loyal Manawatu Lodge of Oddfellows, M.U., was held last night, Bro. F. Nevill, N.G., being in the chair. Bros. C. H. Gardener and F. Nevill were elected delegates to the Friendly, Societies' Council; and Bros. E. Eyre and J. ; Pettcll were appointed to represent the Foxton Lodge on the council. A sub-committee was sot up to arrange for socials, etc., during the winter.

The Public Works Committee of the Borough Council met last night, and went into -the question of providing a destructor, swimming baths, and transit, and these will be reported on at the next meeting of the council. . •,
