"''[■■'■: (By Telbgraph.-SDecial. CorreßDondent.)' . Dannevirke, March 10. The scratching of Windage,.who pulled Dp lame. yesterday, reduced the. .hurdle' field 1 to' three : runners.. . Moat had: been: : raised considerably for his win yesterday, and Nightmare was made' favourite. 'She led from end to end, and won easily. The winner outjumped the other pair, and : gained a couple of lengths at'each' fence...

Apeculiar feature of the March Handi- \ cap was that the wholo of the runners finished hi the order of favouritism on the machine. ;. Henriii i was .half' a length in front of- Sunbonnet, and Liza was a length • further back. Then came Expansion, ' Tarina, and Dervish in that order. Expansion and Tarina led at the'start, being followed by Hermia and Liza, with Sunbonnet and Dervish next. Hermia had drawn to' the - lead at; the distance,' and, in a close- finish, won by a. length. Liza' began badly, and Dervish got chopped out won after the start. Toanga had the best of the start in the Telephone Handicap by anticipating- the' barrier..:' He led-the whole way ; : Amaru finished close '' up second, and. just beat Ascalon, who came from a long ■ way behind. Ascalon would probably have . won had he not been, unfortunate at the barrier. Conquestina: was left at ■ the .. post, 'while Glenspring .was the last to move as the tapes caught him/ nhd he ran in, the rear the.whole .way. In the Hack Welter Handicap Passive was made. favourite. She began smartly; but was steadied, and Obscurity made the running. Obscurity had a big lead down the back, and.the other candidates held her too cheaply. The result was that, when the straight was reached, she had the race in hand, and won comfortably. There was some hustling in this race ; when going out of .the straight the first time, and Rangikapua, who is always slow to find his feet, .seemed to get the; worst, of.it. ;.. The big. race was, an exciting contest, and the placed horses finished close together. Miss; Advance and Clomora were in'the lead, going out of the straight, but, at the, five-furlongs post, Truganini lan to the front., Going round the bot torn, turn,' Sandstream. was close to the leaders, and , Clcniora. was handy. . • Tru-. ganini and'Sandstream .were fighting out, the finish when Te Puia came on the Tails, "and put in. her claim,, but'Sandstream managed to win by a neck. Clemora was fourth and Voetgang last. C. Jenkins, who rode tho winner, has now had the mount on him on four occasions and lias won each time. Sandstream, it may be mentioned, filled second place last year in both the races, which he. won. at Daunevirke this year. After her good showing on the first day, it was generally reckoned that Sea Eagle would havo most to.say in the Juvenile Handicap. She began well, and, with: Deploy, ran in the lead to the turn and then came away, and won without "being extended. A. good race for second place saw W'aikehua just ahead of De- . ploy. '■•.'.--, Strathrooirawas a slightly better favourite than Golden Water in the Maugatera Hack _ Handicap. The very small difference in machine numbers probably represented the difference between the two riders.' The Gold Beef gelding began smdrtly, but "before a furlong had been covered Str'athmoira headed him. In the straight Golden Water put in a good run, but tho Soult horse held him sale anil won by a length. Aim well was a poor third. , • . The Kaitoke Welter Handicap was regarded as a gift for Lethean, and absurdly short prices were quoted by the

fielders. Aboriginal made the early running with Marten, and Lethean was just behind the pair. Entering the straight Lethean went to the - front and appeared to bo winning easily, but Marton stuck to his work very gamely, and in a close finish won by a neck. The remainder of the field was a good way ; back. MASTERTON R.C. ACCEPTANCES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Masterton, March 10.
