Backers met disappointment eariy when Windage failed to, land the odds laid on him in the hurdles. There were only two starters, as Loiigner, Goldbird,,| and Canadian were scratched. Moat and Windage kept. well, together till the halfmile post, when the former came .on and won easily. Windage is under suspicion in one of bis legs, and 'this may have provouted his doing a proper preparation. ■■ . . Strathmoira and . Toanga were, backed in the order named, for the Makirikiri Handicap, but both got bad passages, the former especially being knocked about. Curator led at the start, and after a furlong had been covered was well clear of the field. Then Toanga, Strathmoira, and Aimwell got mixed up, and the two latter fell back badly. Round tho bend Toanga was being hustled to get to Curator, and in the straight he caught him. The latter then ran wide, and carried Toanga with him. Then Strathmoira, who had got a run on the rails, challenged tho leaders, and in a good finish was only half a length behind I Toanga, whom Curator beat by a nose. The way was now cleared for the Cup, in which Saudstream was made a good favourite, while • Tβ Puia, Truganini, Parable, and Clemora all had followings. Miss Advance and Parable led the neld in the run down the straight the first time. To Puia, Lawn Rose, and tho, favourite were last round tho baclc. Sandstream, when going up to improve his position, got chopped back to last again, and this bad the effect of changing Jenkins's, tactics, as he then pulled his mount round and wont up on the outside. Meanwhile Miss Advance was still in tho lead, but at the straight Sandstream had, caught, her, and then came on and won easily. Clemora finished very strongly after being ridden in the roar tho whole way instead of makiag use of hja light' weight. ■ • ■■••■•■ I

There was a big field in the Nursery Handicap, but tho youngsters gave no trouble at tho post, and moved oil in a good line. Kohinoor mid Sea Eagle were the quickest to find their legs, and led throughout. Mr. Lowry's horse was a winner till the last few strides, but Jones rode Sea Eagle verv hard, and got up in time to make a head heat. The Trenthamowned Deploy, who did not begin well, was galloping over everything at the finish. Killaloo. was. fourth. Captain Bell, with Oliver in the saddle, was the best backed in the Hack AVelter, but his display vrns not bv any means a good one. From an uneven start the favourite led, but was soon supplanted by Lord Irwell, who led to the turn by making a series of fast . runs. There Liquid Air displaced him, but was immediately tackled by Passive, and- beaten »y a neck, after a good finish. The favourite finished very badly, and the honours of the race went to the winner, who got away from tho barrier nearly last. The Trenfliam-trained Liza upset. all calculations in the Flying Stakes by leading the whole way, and just lasting long enough to defeat Hermia, who was favourite. Expansion was another candidate who received strong support, but though he was in third place to the.turn he cracked up then and finished well back. ~.'-. ; ■ The_ betting was spirited in the Electric Hack, in,which a big field went to the post. Hine-korangi was first out, while Ambala was left slightly.' ' Tho \\averley horse led to the turn, where Wer.spring assumed charged and won rather comfortably. Ambala finished"very tasc, and cut Amaru out of second money. Ascalon was close up fourth. , : . Despite his big impost, Swimming I»lt was made favourite in the Tannim Welter. He was put in blinkers to-day, and it certainly quietened him a little, but ho was still a bit restless at: the barrier. At the start he was on the but he got a bad bump, aud was sont back to last. Golden Water was in command the whole-.way,'and though he ran about a good bit when the pressure was on he maintained his advantage to the finish. , The favourite was fourth, and Ballyneety last; : ACCEPTANCES FOR SECOND DAT.: ißy Telegrapta.-Prcas Association.! DEATH OF MR. J. B. WILLIAM:SON.:;:. ,;; ' ' ■;;• ',: / (By Telegranh.— Special Corresnondent.) ■ Wanganui, March 9. The news of the' death of Mr. J.'. B. Williamson, the well-known Auckland owner and trainer, of racehorses, which occurred in a private hospital Bere at an early hour this morning,-caused-quite a painful sensation.' The deceased, who was well and favourably known in racing ■ ciroles throughout tho Dominion, was a frequent visitor.to Wanganui. His many friends commented on the fact that he was looking remarkably well last week, when he attended the Wanganui Jockey. Club's meeting, where he had a couplo of. horses running. Hβ certainly complained of having an attack of rheumatism in his shoulder, but otherwise appeared td bo in.the best of health. The pains in his shoulder grew worse, and yesterday 'he sought, medical advice, and later on entered a private hospital, where lie was operated upon, three doctors being.in attendance. Later on, symptoms of bloodpoisoning sot in, and gradually developed notwithstanding all that medical skill could do. He passed away at an hour this morning. The Who was 56 years of age, leaves a wife and grown-up family to mourn their loss.
