: .The following interesting; :-'. character sketch of the Bishop of Lincoln is (riven in the "PaU Mall ffiizette" biographies ~- The enthusiasm 1 with which- his defenders rallied round Dr. King when he was attacked by the Ctnrch Association was not merely zeal for"Ritualism." The man ..counted no less than the cause, liven those who ha-vo never come' intimately under the venerable Bishop's influence can see 'at once, in'his spiritual face and'sweet, sunny manner, why ho is so commonly referred to as "the saintlv Bishop of Lincoln." Half a century ago, Bishop Wilberforce knew what he was doing when he selected the young curate of Wheatloy as chaplain- and assistant lecturer at his Guddesdori College of which Edward King was; eventually to become _'T)ean Principal." Here, and during his subsequent years as Kerius Professor of Pastoral Theology at Oxford .when "Canon/ King's Friday evenings" became a notable institution, his influence with his juniors was always irresistible. He could joke with them or be gravely in earnest, but he always won them. Hence the deep personal feeline on his side when, in 1888, he was selected as the foremost victim of yet one more attempt to "put down Ritualism." Into the details of the "Lincoln Judgment" and the subsequent decision of the j'udicial Committee of the Privy Council very largely in'• Dr. King's favour, it is unnecessary to enter here; Men of all schools roust' recognise;' the pathos of the fact that it was around such a personality that so much acrimony gathered. Dr lung has been Bishop of Liucoln since 1880, and was born in 1820. •'
