GIRLS' COLLEGE SWIMMING SPORTS.

t The happiest people; in Wellington yes-, terday afternoon were probably the girls teJung part: in . the college • swimming sports,, which ; were --held .at the Thorn-, don •Baths.-.. It was one "of;, the hottest; days of;-.the season,.-'.arid going through the streets betwoen the high,' 1 : close buildings, .which shut in all ' the'-. heat,' and.over : the pavements which'- threw it back, .one - passed . scores .of unfovtunate' . people- looking so red and uncomfortable, going back to work .in airless offices, unhappy. beings. - And then, one wont down, to .the baths, whore the - fortunate folk were , disporting themselves,-, clad in ftipv .wet garments, l diving off ■ the board, . .hooting tile chute, - swimming; about the' baths ivith evident intense enjoyment, their, ."sleek-' heads' bobbing through the water/ and, every now and' then, ajittle .company-' churning across the'balhs,'";with. an; -amazing display of energy'. .'; '.. The girls- seemed ■ as- .inuch .at home - in the water as fi,sh,' and one conld well believethat quite a number of them spend, much-time at-the. baths.every day. A great, many seemed to. be taking part in the;-,sports, rwhilo' the others—the nonsombatants, 'pupils, .-.teachers; and -!par-, entsr—gathered:.round; to :grow cooler by : the . .contemplation . 'of '' their, content: There were many, visitors. Mrs.; Barron , did the. judging. -V, The championship Tace'.was most interesting,-; arid .a .'very., good race it was. The. girl' who, ■ came. .within a very little of winning the'championship last year .was regarded' as' a certainty for l this, but" she'was beaten by a girl new to tho school, this term; and again she was .bca-ten by. a' very little..
