PROGRESS OF MISSIONS. THE BROOKLYN ORPHANAGE. The monthly meeting of the Wellington Presbytery was held yesterday.. sent: The riev's. J. M'Caw, Dr. Gibb, L. Thompson, i: Gibson Smith, W. Douglas, G. K. Stowell, A. C. W. Standage, B. Hutson, R. luglis, A. Thomson, J. K. Elliott, and W. Sbirer, Messrs. Johnston, M'Farlane, Aitken, and Pollock. In the absence oi the Moderator, the Rev. J. M'Caw presided. s ' In regard to the application of Mr. Rattray, home missionary at Pongaroa, for power to dispense'the Sacrament, the result ' of communications .with .the Hawke's Bay Presbytery was reported. The Rev. R. Inglis moved,, and Rev. G. K. Stowell. seconued, a motion that the matter stand over till the assembly had dealt with regulations concerning home missions. . _■ ■ _!,,.,, Mrs. Shirer and- Mrs. (Dr.) Elliott were appointed to iill two vacancies on the Board of-the Women's Hostel. . It wasreported from the loreign Mission Committee that.the Rev. W. iMawson (Canton), who is on- deputation work during his furlough, would be at Cartcrton and Masterton. on April 3, and at Pahiatua on May 5 and 6. Dr. Porteous had been married, and was, commenting work in India.,, The Rev. P. Mill would leave the New.' Hebrides for. London by the April steamer with a translation ot the New Testament.. The Rev., John Mackenzie (Christchurch) "and .Rev. A. T. Thomson (Masterton), had: been; appointed delegates to the World's Missionary Con-, ference at Edinburgh. Native Christians in the New Hebrides had'raised a collection for foreign missions. The Rev. J. Kennedy Elliott expressed satisfaction with the progress made m foreign-mission work. The Rev. H.' Braddock,' formerly Anglican minister at Kaikoura, wrote applying for the position of home. missionary, with a view to later application for-ad-mission 1 to the regular Presbyterian ministry. Mr. Braddock has been doing missionary work at Petc-ne and elsewhere in the Wellington, province. • .... '.. It was decided to commend the application to the Home Mission Committee. The Kev. Dr. Gibb stated that his recent appeal for the services of home missionaries had borne! some fruit,"-three offers having been received from -very promising men. There we're-still,-however, a number of vacancies to fill. ' | Regarding the Brooklyn Orphanage, whose development now requires the provision of a .larger building,... Dr. Gibb stated that it had been, most admirably conducted, and- its management would challenge comparison, with', that of any. similar institution in New Zealand or out of it. Not only,bad the bodily well-being of the children been considered with an intensity of care.but. the. greatest attention had been .'given to • their- education, manners, and. religious training, and he believed;. that.i.already,,the most ..satisfactory results were manifesting themselves. It was resolved to ask. congregations to take.up ■, collection for the orphanage' inApril'" in view of expected developments. ,' It was agreed that the following home mission....staiions-ibe visited and reported on by deputies.of the Presbytery during the year:—Eketahuna, Pongaroa, Uppei Hutt, Wadcstown, and Rona-Bay. A discussion took place on, the followi ing' remit from the General Assembly:—' ■"That, in view of the variety, of- hymn books now in use in this Church, the assembly strongly recommends the introduction of the-new. edition of Church Praise to new congregations and congregations making a change in.their hymn book.* -The Rev. Dr. Gibb, - in -moving the adoption of the resolution, said he be-lieved-that the now Church; Praise was the best hymn book in existence. ■ The Rev. J. Kennedy Elliott spoke in favour of - the Churcli Hymnary. ;• The Rev'.
