A COMPARISON
AMEBICAN AND .ENGLISH ROUTES. Bj Tehffrapb—Press Assooiatlon—Oopyrlf lit
(Reo. February 6, S p.m.) • ' London, February 6. Sir Ernest Shackleton, who led the last Antarctic expedition, from the Pacifio Bide, to within 97 miles of the South Pole, lias been interviewed, on the subject of tho proposed i American expedition, planned by Commander Peary, which is to attack the South Pole from- the Atlantic side. ...
Comparing the distance, from the Pole, of the Americans' Atlantic base, with that of Captain Scotfs, projected Pacific base, Sir . Eimest Shackleton says' that the former will be 200 miles more northerly. Moreover, he doubts whether " the Americans will be. able to land on' that part .iif the Antarctic Continent which they propose to make their baso, because the regions; are unknown. • .
The Americans, he adds, will be further handicapped owing to the fact that ihey will bo travelling, over quite new ground, whereas Captain Scott will be retraversing thi route over .which Sir E. Shackleton himself went to within 97"' miles of the Pole. :;1 ' '
- [Sir Ernest: ShackletonV: two . points—, the greater distance from the Pole on the Atlantic side, and the fact tliat the. country is less known—are not new. . In his advocacy 'of an Atlantic- route,' Dr. Bruce ; • regards: the fact ■•of the 1 .country being . new: as ;an advantage from the jrtandpoint of the interests of; science; Further,' though he', considers that the distant© by the Atlantic route he.favours is'3oo. miles longer, he . theorises thict the ascent to the high polar, plateau met .with-by Sir E. Shacldeton will be more, gentle' than' by: Shackleton's route; :• in short, :i that the Atlantic approach will bo longer but easier.. Dr. Bruce's case was Bert out in The Dominion of January 12.] •
. SCOTT'S GEOLOGIST. (Bee. February 6, 5 p.m.) London, February 5; Mr. Griffiths Taylor, of Sydney, who ig at present at Cambridge,, has been appointed geologist to Captain ScotFs Antarctio expedition.
