'■..Vi'TßE' ANJJHAL EXHIBITION. ;■• Yesterday, at the Technical School, was kept as garnishing day," and in all the rooms tho best work.of the year was being set up, the result bedng |ln attracUve exhibition- that shouJd.be visited by all who are interested in the development of art in Wellington and its-application to commercial u6es. The TechnksaT School-deals: with, a great variety of subjects, and the exhibits range from a design for a church to an.enamelled pendant. In' the: clay-modelling room there • are plaster casts, and busts, dona in clay that have to be carefully wrapped in rags to prevent their cracking, with the heatj and. that, even then are apt to develop fissures in the neck. Nothing here exceeds in interest the decorative work, some of which: has been done expressly for certain Wellington homes. Tho life-room contains .'a- quantity of work, a good deal ofwhich is meritorious, while much is strong and vigorous. . Some of the best-of it'.was exhibited in the art exhibition, but the whole mass, of work seen together is more interesting. The elementary room is lined with work carefully and thoroughly done. One notices that' not :.so nvuoh' space is devoted to desigh, as was the oase last year, and this is because .so much more time has been 6pent on designs applied. to stencilling. / Probably' the ladies who visit the exhibition will be more interested'., in these stencilled portieres cushion covers, and table-oloths than in any other ' section,. for nowadays stencilling has become very popular, and many an..' amateur boldly attempts it. There are some excellent speoimens shown here,' and some of the best designs are tho work of quite young students. For souio time nov? classes for enamelled jewellery have: been held at the school, and very good work is now being turned out.: The stu. dents do metal work as well as the enamelling, and thero is a very/ good exhibit . of pendants, necklets, and buttons, the work being of a distinctly better.order than last year. Amdrig minor -exhibits' are specimens of:book binding, of lettering for signs, and designs for book covers.,. Tho architectural section has a small'but' very .'interesting exhibit, and .in tho same room are some.good designs, the-work of the. comriierciil classes. .'..'.'■■/ .The/.school/aims at giving, as wide..an. art eduoatipn as possible,' and / students take up .a variety-of subjects. It also aims at .encourag-ing-the. individuality of the student... During tho past edx months a new:departure,has been, made in one direction,/and Miss Sybil.Johnston, has :been giving lectures.to .several .classes oh art in the home, trying,to make the students realise the difference between: spurious and real artistic work. : ..''
