Numerous instances aro on record of cows ~ giving throo calves at a birth, a few instances of four, but apparently only one caso of. five calves at a birt.li. This caso occurred at Wilburton, Ely. in England, in February, 1900. Mothor and offspring wore photographed. • The owner of the group wrote at-tho time.as follows: — "Tho cow had been anxiously watched for days beforehand, something abnormal being oxpocted. Tho iivo calvcs wero all born alive, and all cxcopt one were -strong. That ouo, I am sorry to say, died to-day. Tho other four are perfectly well, and, I think, aro stiro to-live. Tho mother, too, is doing woll. Hundreds of people from tho adjoining villages and towns have been to soo tliem. I can quito bolievo that'many people would consider tho fact untrue,"as I mysolf nover heard of 6ucli a caso, but sooing is believing. Tho cow has been under a vet. * for tho last three woeks." Two brothers,named Waltor Lawrence, aged seven, and David William Lawrence, six. lost their lives in an ieo accident' at Kidsgrovo, Staffordshire. Along Avilli another lad, named Brooks, they iwent to tho Bath Pool, a largo slioet of water which was frozen over. Tho brothers wont across the ico to'a part sheltered by trees, whoro cho' ioo gavo way under them. Brooks, who had remained on tho bank, immediately went for assistanoo, and met tho father of the boys and his own fathor ooming from work. Both men ran to tho pool, and succeeded in gottiug tho bodies from the water, but lifo was oxtinct.
