BUILDING IN THE CITY.

A STEADY INCREASE. Duriug tlio past six or seveu weeks, there has been an improvement in the number and value of the buildings being erected in the city, but, on tho other hand, there has been a considerable decrease in regard to cottages , and dwellings. Tho . figures are about; the same as at. the beginning of tho year, but there is a distinct decrease as compared with those of last year. ; The following table indicates. tlio approximate increase in the value of,tho buildings in course of orection:— '■ ' ' £ For the fortnight ending March 9 5,400 For tho fortnight ending March 23 10,000 ■for the fortnight ending; April 6 ... 15,000 For the fortnight ending April 20.;. 61,000 The value of the buildings for which, permits have been issued sinco April 20 to date is about £11,700 in the city, and about £3000 in Melrose. There are one or two large jobs, notably Mr. H. Brittain's, in Manners Street, and' if permits for these are approved, Mr. Murdoch,- Chief Building Inspector, thinks, that the amount might compare favourably ' with the total for the past fortnight-.: The stalf is .being kept bu3j at present and he hopes that this will.'bo maintained. . A list of the principal, buildings iii course ( of in the city' is given below: The Union Steam Ship Company's new offices on Customhouse Quay are one of the largest' building undertakings' at present. So far, only the preliminary work has-been commenced. The architects are Messrs. Crichton and 'M'lCay, and the builders Messrs. Mitchell-and King. Wow. olliees are being erected for Messrs. Dalgety and Co. in Featherston Street.. The' contract has only recently been let and little beyond: the/work of putting in the foundations has yet been done.', Messrs. Crichton and Jl'liay : prepared.the plans for the building, -which is being erected by Messrs: Campbell,and'Burke. ... . '.'. • The '-Alliance Assurance offices are to be built on Grey Street, but . the. work is not yet fully started. Messrs; I'enty and Blako are the architects, and'i Messrs. Trevor and; Son the builders. ... -''■ A staff of men are,busily engaged on the excavation in connection . with the building being erected on the Bannatyne 'estate at tho corner .of; Featherston and Hunter Streets. Trevor and Son..' .-; -. . .• ; i At tho corner of Willis and Mercer Streets the work of demolishing the old buildings on, the site, is actively proceeding in preparation for tho erection of new offices and shops for/Messrs. Cooper, 'Ltd.- ? Mr.\ Swan, is tho architect, and Messrs. Campbell and Burko have the contract for : the .building; '■.•Office's "are-in.- course of erection -at the corner of Panama and Featherston Streets for Messrs.; Jloorhouse ; and' Hadfield. Mr. Natusch is the .'architect,-', and', the contractor, is Mr. W. Glendinning. - New offices are 'being, built in Featherston' Street for-Mr. A- 1). Kennedy, and they are about lip'to tho-first floor. Mr. F. do J. .OIoro:.is the-architect, and the builders are Messrs. K. A. Wakclin and Son. , ; ... , Tho shops and storerooms, which aro being erected in .Cuba Street by -.Mr. : G'. T.
