Immense clouds of : steam-were rising. '■ An eruption on White Island was seen from the New Zealand Shipping Company'ssteamer Kaipara early on. Thursday morning/ during the passage from Auckland to Giaborne. Mr. Wortbington, the. second officer; reports that from 2 a.m. to-day a light, con-: tinuous -stream, of. black smoke, in which flameswere distinctly'seen, rosefrom the island.
