RETAIL RISES IN WHISKY AND BEE! (Rec - . May 2, 4.30 p.m.) London, May 1. Owing to the new liquor license dutit proposed in the Budget, the price of bee has been increased by a halfpenny a pinl and tho prioo of spirits (the duty on whic is proposed to be increased by 3s. 9d. pe gallon) by one penny per glass. The Unionists in Parliament have • ap pointed four committees to prepare report and to draft amendments to the Budget. It is considered by opponents that th Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr. Lloyd George) has utterly ignored the balance be tween direct and indirect taxation, in orde: to serve party purposes. Several complaints have been made thai the Budget is conjectural as to the rovenui [ yield of: the new taxes. .It is persistently reported that Mr. Lloyd-George/anticipate! a large .surplus in 19i0, enabling■ tile :removal of a considerable portion of the taxation. Then the Liberals will appeal to the country. . .
