THE ASSOCIATION GAME.

SENIOR FIRST DIVISION. Everything was in favour of good displays of "soccer" on Saturday, but none of the four senior matches,, except Diamonds v. Wanderers, were anything abovo tho average. ' The. form displayed in the Swifts-Ramblers , match, played at the Newtown Park, was i fairly good, and tho play was generally fast and interesting, .but:.Swifts,..heldi.too many guns for their opponents, and camo'off victors for 4 goals to one; Although; Ramblers rallied gamely at different stages "of tho match, Swifts practically had the upper hand; all through, their combined work arid individual efforts both being superior : to thoso of the. lpsors. . Considering that more than!'half: of the; Ramblers'' team '-is : :made ,up of >last year's, juniors, ihowever, their performance'.was a : creditable .ono. ' The first goal was tho result of tho Swifts' initial attack. ' Jl'Lean kept out a good 'shot" from tho right wing, but a minuto or two later Sparrow sent tho ball under the bar after a struggle in' goal mouth;: A brief rally by Ramblers, led by Wills, ended;in Swifts retaliating, and Toohill centered nicely ti Sparrow, but' this time the, centre forward failed. -Swifts kopt at it, and two shots in succession 'wero nicely' saved by • M'Lean. Play evoned up for a time, but travelled fast. At length the. hopes of the Ramblers were raised by a goal by Smallbono, who scored, as the result of passing in front of tho_ - posts. - Before half-time! was , sounded Swifts ; added - .'another goal, and ; missed a penalty,' which was' brilliantly saved by the Ramblers' goalkeeper. i/THo goal fell to P. Pye-Smith,' with , a well-direoted, ;if somewhat lucky high dropping , shot .from tlio right wing.. The sccond half was. all ', in favour Of Swifts,, and two' more / goals were.added. The first was mainly duo to Guise, who sent in a stilf shot, which M'Lean'kept out. The ball was not. got clear, howevor, and M'Callum took it On his chest.close to tho posts, and ; sent it through. The final score fell to Sparrow, and . was the result of a 'well-ti.rr. i.» pMsi.from P.; Pye-Smith. .-.-Thi ... •winning , combination were. Set Smith,. PETONE. . , Rovers journeyed to Petone to play the .fiubnrban f team,-; and : 'made a ;hadrstart bj losing"! the toss :: . and-havlhgii to play."with ,th6*rsiiri 'iri their eyes, : After "the ;kiek-o(f they were penalised, arid had plenty to do -in- -keeping Petone from .. scoring;'. ■ Several corneris: were; conceded t Petono, but ptoved tniitless, the 'excellent defence of. Bethell and Duignan, and Panlington. in goal,- being largely responsible for this; \To)VArds the end of tho first spell Barry scored Off'a, pass from:Millo'r,'who;beat:several oppcyionts. Duncan: came away in good stylo shortly , afterwards, and' centred to the everwatchful Miller, who mado no mistake. \\ ith these two scores against them, Petono livened up: considerably, and mado determined. efforts., to equaliso. Phillips and AL JVenzie, in the forwards,- are doing good Work. The former, who has played good football, showed some tricky footwork. Y.M.C.A With a; good left' wing,. and Gibson ■ iri the centre,; often worked into scoring positions, but- bad shooting,; and tho capital stoppiri" of MArdle and Hall,'not forgetting Rowan" kept tho goal intact, with the result that thero wns no score at half-tinio. Chaneine over, -y.AI.p.A. .got, their turn : of the tun, the WKht Blues soon got: to work, MAenzio being prominent, for his toubh-lino it wis not'long, before rhillips, rfroiii f about 18 yards, scored with ft hard, drive that would have tested a bettor man than Mollis. V.M.C.A. defence, at any stage of the game, weak, now seemed to break down, and the "Scots'-' scored again from tho right wing. The match now seemed to bo all over, btit.Tiinperley arid'his mate worked up on .the, loft., and M'Lellan' in trying to save, played- through his own goal, out of Rowan's reaoh. : A "brither Scot"'gave a skirl On-tho bagpipes,at'this stage,; but this inspiriting music ' did i not havo the desired ctfcotj-aa from a run on tho right wing, Phillips, a last year's fourthClass ' boy, beat Rowan with one along: tho ground. Time was called shortly afterwards.' The : Y.M.U.A. ' forwards 'lost 'numerous chances, and.still, on the day's play they must bo considered luclty to ■ have : pulled a point out of :the .match, v Norman, (f Morecamb is wasted at baok, and should bo played in his natural position outside right. - Timperley nnd Gibson wero tho best of tho forwards. Irvino , plays a "hard" game at centre halt'. Tho haok's wore weak, ;but the custodian had no chance with the shots which beat him. Tho Scotsmen hav# a good man in Rowan. Hall has retired from centre-forward to loft-baok, -and dit hcquitted himself well, -as did M'Ardle. Al'Lolian will tacklo anything, and. nippod in the bud a lot' of opposition inofariieu'ts Phillips and M'Konzio wero tho best of a fair lot of forwards. Mr. J. R.
