RETRENCHMENT.
AT THE TECHNICAL SCHOOL. A BCH.EME ADOPTED. The Wellington Technical Education Board recently came to tho conclusion that the state of its finances was such as to call for a thorough examination of its present scheme of staff and salaries. The director (Air. La Trobe) was instructed to prepare a report, and this was submitted' to tho board at its meeting last night. • The director, in bis report, recommended that in view of the financial position of the sohool, the class in pattern-OTtting for bootmakers, under Mr." Mapplebeck, be discontinued, owing to.lack of students.' He also recommended: . ' That the services of Mr. P. Ellis are not necessary in the machine drawing and design class- on Tuesday and, Friday even•ings, and that he be offered t £20 per itttititii to continue the Wednesday evening, class in geometry and mechanical drawing. "That Mr. J. Ellis being now availablo for the wood-carving classes, Mr. J. Crawford's services, which were temporarily obtained at £40 per annump be dispensed with. That the matter of ".ho cooking classes be left over till arrangement!! |re made (at the end of this quarter)li for i giving lessons in domestic economy to,the; 1 girls in, the day commercial classes, in l axordance with a suggestion approved by the; Education Department, which will increase!our capitation grants by about £300, without materially increasing expenses.
