Referring to tlio Greenwich case, cabled on January 9, Mr. Taverner (Agent-General for Victoria) explains that tho Imperial Government holds that the uso of such terms as "Burgundy" and "Bordeaux" with the word "Australian" is legitimate, and does not conflict with tho Madrid Convention of 1891. The French Ambassador has been informed accordingly. In tho case mentioned in the above cablecram, the. proprietor of a small restaurant at A on- Cross was fined 205., with costs one shilling, for selling Australian, wine as "Burgundy." The wholesale firm who supplied him admitted that the bottles wero' labelled in error.
