ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

SUDDEN DEATH. The sudden death of a wharf labourer named Wm. Howard. 50 years of age, who was found dead on the floor of the jjcdroom at his lodgings in Tinakori Road, at 8,45 a.m. on Thursday, was the subject of an inquiry by Dr. A. M'Artlmr, S.M., Coroner, on lhursday afternoon. Evidence was called to show that deceased, a single man, and a native of Liverpool, met with an accident whilst working on a cargo steamer at the wharf on March 2, a bale of wool ialliii" on his back. After being discharged from the hospital, he was sent to the Convalescent Homo on March 10, and four clays later went to his lodgings, where lie died. Deceased had complained of a pain in his chest, and thought he was suffering from indigestion. He went to bed at 9 pirn, on Wednesday, and was found dead on the floor of the bedroom next morning. From a statement made when he was taken to tho hospital suffering from gastritis, tho result of an injury through having been struck on the back by a bale of wool whilst working on tho steamer Clan M'Leod, deceased had fallen down unconscious after having his tea. He had previously been struck on tho chest by a falling cheese case.. The modioli evidonce attributed tho cause of death to rupture of the aorta. A verdict was brought in accordingly. FOUND DEAD. The deceased came from Ballarat a year ago to act as coach to the Otago Rowing Club. Ho suffered from a severe form of heart disease, and had been recently in the hospital. An inquest was deemed unnecessary. Tho Eastor holidays rarely pass without a shooting accident occurring, and this Easter is no exception to the rule. A lad named Frederick Patience, 17 years of ago, was out shooting near Terawhiti yesterday, when he was accidentally shot in the thigh. Tho wound is stated to be a severe one, "tho shot having gone right through the fleshv part of the thigh. v ■
