-THE IMPORT'MARKETS. . . . \ The trade doing between merchant and retailer is within ■ small compass and ; .steady., 1 lie. fourth passed quietly, and apparently satisfactorily. Trade with the United States 3s.foiling off owing to.the necessity of curtailing imports, and it is believed thai one steamer a month less' will be dispatched from New York. Theso rates were supposed to apply to prarctirally. all lines. oEand, this action, of 'the, combined lines; created considerable friction and criticismamongst exporters, who advocated returning to the schedule of rates in operation some timo ago. The.contention was that Tough lines of cargo, such ta resin, plaster, oil, turps., clothespins, washboards,'etc., should not, and could not, afford to pay theso high rates. Thegeneral opinion was that affairs would,be adjuste.il again on a proper" basis', in the near future.
