There is indignation throughout tho Tuapeka and Roxburgh district in consequence of Sir Joseph Ward's intimation to tho member for the electorate that because thcro is no prospect of tho Lawrence-Roxburgh line proving payable, work is to bo stopped and the men to be transferred to other Otago railway works. Tho protest addressed the Prime Minister by Mr. R. Scott, M.P., in respect to the stoppage of work on tho Lawrence-Beau-mont railway is likely to bo forcibly backed up. The "Star" says: "AVe shall not allow our agreement with the general policy of the Ward Administration to prevent us telling Ministers that they have been guilty, of a serious breach of faith. Mr. Millar must expect to be called to task for his share in the bad business, not only as Minister for Railways, but as a Dunedin representative." [The Prime Minister replied by telegraph yesterday to representations on' the above subject by the local Chamber of Commerce, the Railway League, and the member for tho district. He expressed regret that eirf rendered the course which tho Government was taking necessary, and as a matter of common honesty to tho N country tho Government was not prepared to go oil with the work until Parliament had had an opportunity of reviewing tho position.]
