PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT'S THANKS. A LETTER TO SIR JOSEPH 'WARD. The Prime Minister (Sir J. G. Ward) received yesterday the following letter from ex-President Roosovelt :— The White Houso, Washington,. February 27, 1909. My Dear Sir Joseph,— Through Admiral Sperry, I havo received tho beautiful illuminated address to the President, sent by you as Primo Minister,' and by other officials of tho New Zealand Government. I have at tho same time received the boautiful album of Now Zealand views and the Maori cloak presented by Lady Ward, on behalf of the members of the Arawa tribe. I desiro to express to you, thru- you to your colleagues, and especially to Lady Ward, my very profound appreciation of the courtesy shown me, and above all I desire to give expression to the appreciation of the entire American people for the generous courtesy and hospitality with which the people of New Zealand received tho American Fleet. Pray tell Lady Ward that we shall always keep the boautiful Maori cloak, as wo shall the album of New Zealand views. May I beg that you will express to your colleagues my thanks for tho raoro than kindly warmth of their greeting to me? Most certainly, if fortune favours me, I. shall some /day visit New Zealand. I have always felt a particular desire to see New Zealand, not only because of the natural beauty of £ho islands, but because, like alj men interested in soand industrial problems, I am very desirous of looking into tho way in which you in New Zealand havo faced tho question of their solution.
