PROMOTIONS AND RETIREMENTS.

PERSONAL AND OTHER NOTES. Officers who are promoted or transferred to fill positions made open by retirements will not enjoy their new dignity- until the oxpiration of tho three months' leave of absence granted to retiring officors. Otherwise it would bo nccossary to pay two salaries for the same position. Mr. D. Barron, Commissioner of Crown Lands, Dunedin, is being retired, as well as his brothor, Mr. -A. Barron, Land Purchase Inspector. Mr. D. Barron's retirement, and that of Mr. A. Trent, Commissioner of Crown Lands, Nelson, take placo as from May 1, with three mouths' leave of absence.

Mr. D. Barron was born in Scotland in 18-15, joined the Otago Provincial Government sorvico as draughtsman in 1866, joined tho Gon oral Government servico as district surveyor in 1877, and was promoted to bo Commissioner of Crown Lands and Chief Surveyor, Westland, in 1893, succeeding Mr. Strauclion, tho new Surveyor-General. Mr. Barron was transferred to Southland in 1896 and to Otago in 1901. Mr. 11. M. Skeet, who is promoted from tho position of chief draughtsman, Hokitika, to that of Commissioner of Crown Lands and Chief Surveyor at Invercargill, is 51 years of ago, and has been 33 years in,.the service. He was formerly district surveyor for Taranaki. Mr. R. T. Sadd, promoted from chief draughtsman, Nelson,_ to bo Commissioner of Crown Lands and Chief Surveyor at Nelson, is 50 years old, and has been in tho Government servico 34 years. Ho was formerly district surveyor at Nelson. Mr. J.. W. Davis, chief draughtsman in the Wellington district office of tho Land and Survey Department, who becomes chief draughtsman in the head office, has been 26 years in tho service. Ho was formorly in charge of tho land transfer branch in Wellington, then he went to Auckland in tho same capacity, with that of surveyor, and returned from. Auckland to becomo chief draughtsman in the Wellington office. Mr. M. C. Smith, promoted from acting chief draughtsman in the Now Plymouth office to succeed Mr. Davis, has held the former position for nine months. He is also a surveyor, and has been 27 yoars in the service. Mr. D. W. Gillies, district surveyor, Marlborough, who becomes chief draughtsman at Nelson, is 51 years old, and has been a civil servant for nearly 34 years. Mr. F. A. Thompson, district surveyor, Wellington, who is to bo chief draughtsman at Hokitika, has been 36 years in tho service. He was formerly in tho field as a district surveyor. _ Mr. A. H. Maclean _ and Mr. John King, inspectors of tho Audit Department, who retire on superannuation, have their headquarters at Dunedin and Nelson respectively. Mr. W. C. Holdsworth, who retires from the Audit Department, is a well-known and highly-popular officer. Beforo joining the Audit Department, Mr. Holdsworth wns in the Ho will becomo 60 years of ago during his three months' leave of absence. The retirement of Lieutenant-Colonel Loveday, and also, it is understood, those of the Audit officers and some others who have just received notice, •will date from'May'l. with three months' leave of absence on full salary. Mr. H. Blundell, the retirina record clerk of the Treasury, was. born in 1846, and joined the Civil Servico in'lß7o. He was fc> a time a committee clerk in tho Leccislativo Council and House of Eenresentatives. Afterwards he went into the Land Office., and in 1873 he joined the Treasury, and soon after joining assumed the position of record clerk, which he has held over since.
