STOCK ON OCEAN VOYAGES.
/ A WORD ABOUT RATIONS.. .The following' note from "The Journal of the Board of Agriculture" of Britain will interest New Zealand fanners who import valuable stock. It sets ■' forfci the rations recommended for" the voyage as, follows "All . inquiry has recently been addressed to, the board as to the food necessary ■ for " cattle during ocean voyages, 'in order to land them, at. as moderate an • outlay, as possible, in 'good healthy condition. It is considered the! following rations • would be suitable for full-sized cattle' weighing • about' 15001b;':— -1411). hay, 71b. straw (cut up), 51b. crushed oats, 31b. bran, lib. crushed linseed. On alternate days 101b. of mangolds might with advantage, be given in place of the. ground linseed, when a little less hay would be required. Cattle of less weight would naturally require less food. I' 1 or an animal weighing about 10001b., 101b. hay, 51b. straw, 31b. oats, 21b. bran, and 2-31b. linseed would be suitable. The ration required, by. full-sized cattle .would be enough for Tive'large or six small sheep, but a daily allowance of roots instead of the , linseed meal would probably give more satisfactory results! A reserve of fodder, is necessary to allow for possible delays." .•
