Tho heavy going upset tho calculations of 1 backers, and only two actual favourites prevailed throughout the day. The withdrawal of Waipaku and Tangcroa left only six starters for the Cup, and though Maiora was favourite, ho never had a look in. Merrio Roso and Iney mado tho whole of tho running, and tho former drew right away at the business end and won easily. Wliotumarama lias ! a bad cold, and will scarcely be lit to race to-day. Moloch rail a fair race, and just came too lato to gain second place. In tlio hurdlo race, Don Carlos was favourite, but ho was palpably short of work, and had no chance. Whatakura allowed Waiinaria to lead to tlio straight, and then moved up and won easily. Kelso, who was in fine condition, easily accounted for the two events in which ho was started, but Kurawaka, who is undoubtedly very forward, ran a good second to tlio Petroleum gelding in the last race. Waikaraka and Suiibomiet both carried the confidences of their connections in the March Handicap, but neither had" any chance with Kolso. The stewards met after this race, and cautioned Jenkins for not riding Waikaraka out with the whip. It was a poor lot' that contested tho Maiden Hack Race, and Toango, who was a solid favourite, won comfortably from l'ikiho, who stumbled at tho homo bend. At the conclusion of tho Masterton Hack Handicap," tho owner of Waiwareware entered a protest against tho winner on the ground of boring, but, after hearing the evidence, tile stewards dccided not to alter tho judgo's placings, and Diplomatics ten supporters had tho pleasure of collecting a largo dividend. What was really the most exciting race of the day was the Ladies' Bracelet, in "'hjclii Mr. Lindsay M'Donald, on Aotea, and Mr. A. Allen, on Nadync, were both seen to great advantage. - After a superb finish Aotea just got the verdict by a liarrow margin. Sealer, who was well backcd, ran absolutely last. The Swallow, Andrew Alack, and Conquestina, were also all well backed. Andrew Mack and Swallow shaped badly, ana Conquestina. after leading to tho half distance, succumbed to a challenge from Royal Maid, who gallops with a lot of knee action, and was thus well suited to the heavy going. Tho winner was not neglected by her party, and did. not start such an outsider as might have been anticipated. ACCEPTANCES FOR SECOND DAY. CBY TF.LEGR A Til—rilllSS ASSOCIATION.! m, , „ .
