WELLINGTON ENGINEERS.

ANNUAL SMOKE CONCERT. The annual smoke concert of the Wellington Engineers was lield in Pliilp and Bishop's llooms last evening. Lieutenant Gibbs, officer commanding the company, presided, and a, very enjoyable evening was spent. The menu for tlie supper was quito a unique affair, and not at all calculated to inspire confidence in the viands. There wore "entrenched sausages," "buzzer beer," "rivetted sandwiches," "fascine fags," "guncotton jellies," "slow detonator cheese," "hasty demolition ale," and so forth, but subsequent- investigation restored confidence and courage, and tho repast offered a practical ■ demonstration of "hasty demolitions." Songs and toasts filled in tha best part of the evening, and advantage was taken of the excellent muster to present various .prizes for shooting. The honours fell to Lieut. Gibbs, who appropriated tho "Scot's Cup," "Hallenstein Cup," and the company's gold medal. Q.M.-Sergeant Piercey received a set of carvers; Sergeant Mitchell, a shooting kit; Corporal Barker, the company's trophy; Sergeant Double was awarded tho B class aggregate gold medal and tho "ltoss". trophy; trophies were also presented to Lance-Corporal Grainger, Sappers H. Rogers, Forbes, Corlet, \Y. lladcliffe, Keeble, and Fleet. The three years' gold- badges and personal payments were awarded to Sergeants Vossler and Double aiid Corporal Barker, for engineering, and to Sergeant Elliott, for signalling. About a dozen plain trophies were also presented to other members.
