A cablegram, which was published "two o\ three days aa;o, stated that New Zealand was offering £1,000,000 worth of Treasury Bills, having a currency of OHO| year. Tho report was discredited in this country, and tho Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) denied it, but stated that he was making inquires. Ha informed a Dominion reporter last night that lie had had the cablegram repeated to the High Commissioner, who had replied _tli.it tho report was quite unfounded. The Prime Mm* ister added that there could bo no such issm without his own knowledge, and, moreover, the Government was olily authorised to issue £1,000,000 of i bills, and there were already £'100,000 outstanding. The cabled statement was altogether absurd. In connection with tho opening of tho athletic season to-morrow; the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club is holding a fourmile cross-country event, and n 100 yards sprint. Both races will be derided at Wonderland, the cross-country competition being set down to Start at 3.U0 p.m. sharp, and the sprint to bo run olf at the conclusion of tho longer raeo. Arrangements liavo been made by the club to allow competitors and officials to pass into Wonderland free oi charge. The club is holding its first 'evening meeting on November 18, and the annual sports carnival on December 12., The events for the evening meeting are one liiilo flat, 220 yards junior, and 101 yards sprint.
