BROKEN HILL.

A EIRE IN BLOCK XIV MINE. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPrRIGfIT.) (Rec. October 21, 11.30 p.m.) Sydney, October 21. A fire was discovered this morning at tho 200 ft. level of Block XIV mino, Broken Hill, in close proprietary to the boundary. One hundred and fifty men have been rendered idle owing to smoke and gas. Large quantities of water have been poured in. A number of fire-fighters wore overcome by the fumes.

(Rec. October 22, 0.55 a.m.) • Sydney, October 21. Latest reports state that the fire in Block XIV mine, Broken Hill, has been beat-en back, and is practically in hand, but the gas is very bad. The work of subduing the fire was conducted with great difficulty. The fighters woro repeatedly overcome by the fumes. One, named Eddy, is missing. His mate was rescued in an unconscious state. Heroic efforts were mado to reach the place where Eddy was stationed, but gas drove the rcscuors back.
