CARTEETON.

Four Carterton residents climbed Mount fioldsworth on Sunday morning, and wero rewarded by a magnificent view of Mounts Eginont, Ruapeha, Ngarukoe, tho misty Kaimanawas, and the sea on three coasts, and tho river system of Wairarapa spread like a map beneath their feet. In addition to tho view thoy had the satisfaction of an- hour's conversation with their friends in Carterton by means of mirrors flashing heliograph messages' from mountain top to town below. Farmers report prospects of a splendid season. One Daleiield farmer says ho is now getting as much milk from 23 cows as lie was from 40 last season. In some places crops are so heavy that they aro already going down, but promiso heavy yields.

LEVIN.

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Levin Borough Council was held on Monday night in tho Council Chambers. The Mayor (Mr. B. R. Gardener) presided. Correspondence was received from the Clerk of tho Rongotoa Town Board regarding tho deputation to go to Wellington in connection with tho Levin to Marton railway. Mr. David Roberts wroto stating that ho could not take up contract for settling tanks, for which his tonder had been accepted, as ho had underestimated the prices of steol and other matters in connection with tho contract,' and asked the Council to be considerate. After Mr; Roberts's letter was dealt with in committee it was decidod to call for fresh tenders, and to deduct £10 from Mr. Roborts's deposit to cover expenses of advertising, etc., for fresh tenders. Mr. Bolton (Mayor of Eastbourne) was elected delegate to attend the meeting of the Hospital Board. It was resolved in the matter of tho gasworks loan of £10,000 to issue 30 debentures for £100 each and sovoa debentures for £1000 each, and that one debenture for £100 mature, and bo payable on Ooctober 1 in each year during tho currency of the loan, the first ono for £100 to mature on October 1, 1909. It was resolved that tho Mayor and Councillor Hudson sign coupons and debentures, and tho treasurer, Mr. P. W. Goldsmith, to countersign. A letter was read from Mr. Chas. Williams tondering his resignation from tho Borough Council owing to his being interested in ono of tho borough contracts. It was moved by Councillor Levy, and seconded by Councillor Hudson, that Mr. Williams be written to, pointing out the Council's regret at his having to resign. Other Councillors as well, as tho mover spoke very highly of Mr. Williams's ability as a Councillor. Accounts amounting to £40 12s. 4d, were passed for payment. The Council then went into oommittee to deal with a numbor of applications. | The Rev. Mr. Palmer, of Sydney, has been in this district for tho. last few days in tlie No-License interest. On Sunday morning he preached in St. Mary's (Anglican) Church, going on to preach m Shannon in the evening. On Monday night he lectured in the main street. His audience was a large one. >

WOODVILLE.

Thero wero very few buyers at the public sale of' tho Riverside Estate, held hero on Monday. Only one section was bought at tho price of £22 per aero. ' "Biblo Sunday" is to be celebrated here next Sunday with an open-air children's service in Fountain Square. The townsfolk, together with the railway staff, aro arranging a send-off to Mr. Dobbie, stationmaster, who has been transferred.

FEATHEBSTON.

A meeting of Loyal Unity Lodge was hold on Monday evening, Bro. J. A. M'Carty, N.G., presiding. A credit balance of £43 6s. 3d. was reported; and accounts amounting to £5 9s. 10d., including £3 6s. Bd., sick pay, wero passed for payment. Tho Provincial Grand Master and Deputy Grand Master paid an official visit, and addressed the brethren on matters pertaining to tho Order. After tho business the meeting formed itself into a sooial, when songs! reci-tations,-and musical items wero contributed by those present.
