THE "ALMOST MAN'"
■ FAMOUS CHIMPANZEE HOLDS A RECEPTION. - "Consul the-First," the extraordinarily intelligent chimpanzee performing at the Bostock Menagerie at Earl's Court, held a reception recently of ladies and gentlemen. Mr. Bostock had received so many letters on the subject of the unhappiness of the gifted animal that he allowed a number of pressman to peep behind the scenes, with the idea of' proving that Consul is the happiest chimpanzec in the world. This appeared to be the case when a "Daily News" representative entered the reception room and found Consul on tho; carpet with a cigar in his mouth. Tho chimpanzee sat on a table. anU opened letters asking for his autograph. Jlr. Bostock is teaching him to talk by the aid of a phonograph, and Consul already calls his trainer "Papa." He has a very human laugh. Consul comes from Equatorial' Africa, is worth £5000, and earns £100 a week. That alone ought to mako him happy.
