Mr. Brabant, S.M., gave judgment at th«' Magistrate's Court this morning in .the-case heard last Monday, in which John Bowie Arnott, of-'Petane, storekeeper, was charged, on ; the information of the police, - with selling! on September 12, 190S, to. Harry Smyth, a-bottle of whisky without 'being licensed to sell the same Defendant was convicted and lined £20 and oosts £5 2s. 6d. Section 229 of the Consolidated Act,.. 1903, forfeitureof liquor seized followed conviction.

He had simply to ask the Bynch to give defendant an oppoituuity of paying a line that : i''ht act as a doterront. He had to admit that she had been once previously convicted, hut the quantity of liquor fountl had been small, and lie submitted', that the caso pointed rather to casual sales of liquor than to a sjstcniatio breach of the law. ■ . ' Mr. Widdowson: This woman was lined before and apparently took no notice. I am satisfied that, she persistently sets the law at defiance, and "1 shall inflict .a line that will provj a deterrent.
