A conference under the auspices of the Catholio Truth Society has been opened, in Dublin. Speaking at the, inauguration of the con» ference, Dr. Carr, Archbishop of Melbourne, traced tho growth of tbo Catholic Church in Victoria. He described the astounding progress of Catholic education against great opposition.; Cardinal Logue, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of Ireland, and Dr. Healy, Archbishop of Tuam, participated in' the conference. . ' The main objects of the Catholic Truth Society are to disseminate among. Catholics small and cheap devotional works; to assist the uneducated poor to a better knowledge of ■ their religion; to spread among Protestants in- : formation about Catholio truth; to promote the. circulation of good, cheap, and popular Catholio books. The reoeipts of the society in 1906 amounted to £4398. The Catholic Truth Society may now bo reckoned among the most important of the Catholic organisations in Britain.. It was originally founded by Dr., (later Cardinal) Vaughan, then rector of the Foreign Missionary College' at Mill Hill; but fell into abeyance when he was made Bishop of Salford; this was in 1872. In 1881 the society was formally revived on a larger, scale, mainly through the instrumen- • tality, of Mr. James Britten and the Eev. W. ; H.Cologan; Dr. Vaughan, then Bishop of Salford, was elected president, Mr. Britten and Father Cologan were appointed hon. secretaries, and an influential coramittee,w'as chosen.
