SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CURELTY TO ANIMALS.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of tho Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held yesterday afternoon, Mr. J. Ilott being in the chair. A letter was rccoived from the secretary of tho Canterbury Society (Mr. W. H. Zouch), recommending that 1 the, annual conference be held prior to the'session of Parliament, and asking tho Society to fix the date. It was decided to reply, suggesting that tho Canterbury Scciey fix a date. The following circular letter was received from Mr. Henry Bergh, chairman of tho Committeo on Humane Slaughtering, set up by tho American Society" for tho Prevention of Cruelty to Animals:—"Painfully conscious of the cruelties inflicted upon animals by the present methods of slaughtering, and desirous of preventing, as far as possible, the suffering of animals at the moment of giving up their lives for tho benefit of mankind,- the American Society, through its Board of Managers, offers a reward of fivo hundred dollars for the devico or apparatus, not now in use, which will best accomplish the humane destruction of. animals used for food purposes. The devico must meet the following requirements: First—lt shall, with tho least possible suffering, . accomplish tho desired object of stunning or killing the. animal. Second—lts uso shall not occasion any detioriation to the flesh; nor any serious loss in the value ,of tho skin or other portions of the animal's' body for commercial purposes. Third —The difficulty, cost, and time required in its practical operation, under all conditions, shall not bo so great as to preclude its general adoption. Will 1 you kindly favour us;with the fullest'possible information in. regard to the methods of slaughtering animals—cattle, sbecp, and pigs—in use'in your locality ? We desiro, particularly to know the methods employed in slaughtering animals, according to the tenets of tho Jewish faith; how the animals are slung, a description of tho sling used, and the manner of applying' it; also, what device is commonly used for slaughtering animals that arc killed for tho ordinary market." It was decided to comply with,the request.
