Polling took place yesterday on the Feeding Borough Council's proposals to 'raise a loan of £21,000 for, carrying out a scheme of improvement works. One-third of the ratepayers voted,, and all the four proposals were carricd as follows:— Municipal baths, cottage, and land: public urinals; and improvement to entrances to' town (£2250)—21(3 for, and 64 against. Extension of sewerage, concrete kerbing, and'channelling (£15,000)—235 for, and 45 against. Construction of a ferro-concrete "bridge across, the Makino -Stream in Manchester Street £1750) —216 for, and 65 against. Footpath; formation, metalling, tarring, and sanding (£2000)—242 for, and 35 against. The Feilding Chamber of Commerce has decided that Monday, May 25 (Empire Day), is to lit observed as a holiday, and that no holiday be observed on June 3 (Prince of Wales's Birthday). The Chamber has also resolved to approach the Borough Council to have a poll taken to ■ have the factories' weekly hair-holiday altered to Wednesday from, Saturday, to make it uniform with tho statutory half-holiday of shop assistants whero shops and factories are combined. j GREYTOW. . Mr. Wm. Bcnge, sen., an old Groytown resident, died on Monday at the ripe old age of 89 years.' He came from Kent, England, in 1874/ having been born', there in 1819. - Deceased had resided in Greytown ever since his arrival in the Dominion. He leaves two sons, one daughter, eight grandchildren, and one'great-grandchild. Dr. Valintine, Inspector-General of Hospitals, acknowledged receipt of Dr. Ewart's report concerning "return." cases of scarlet fever. ; He thoroughly endorsed everything that Dr. Ewart had said, especially in regard to the impossibility of preventing a certain percentage of return cases. It said much ror tho management of.the Hospital,, despite the exceedingly unsatisfactory circumstances in which scarlet fever patients wero at present accommodated, that thero .had been so few complaints •on this subject, and that scarlet if over _ had not spread among, tho nurses or patients of the main building. He absolutely failed to' any blame oould bo attachod to the resident staff for the occurrence of return cases—in fact, Dr. Gilray seemed to have acted with extremo caution. Dr. Valintine quite appreciated tho fact that the Trustees shared the opinion with him that bettor accommodation.' was - urgently, needed for such cases. ;' '' was received. . GENERAL.
