OBITUARY.
: ■ MR ROUS-MARTEN. AY TELEORAPa—riIEBS ASSOCIATION—COrK RIGHI London, April 21. Mr. 'nous-Marten, tho .'New' Zealand journalist, died suddenly from heart failure. The late Mr. \ Rons-Marten .'was born in .England. He came-to New Zealand when lie was -about sixteen years "of - age, and would bo about 05 at the time of his death. Ho lived for some years in Southland, where' his father, who had come out to New Zealand for his health, had tftkon up land. About tho year 187G Mr. itous-Marten came to Wellington and joined tho literary staff of tho '"Evening .Post,"'becoming successively subeditor and editor. He also filled the editorial chair of tho "New .Zealand Times." In 1890 lie wont to England as London correspondent for a'Syndicate of Kew. Zealand papers. Ho was a man'ol' varied accomplishments, and in addition to being a capable journalist ho;was' a fmo musical critic. Ho also possessed a wide knowledge of locomotivo engineering and railway matters generally, which was rather unusual in a man who had not been brought up to'the profession. lip was a frequent contributor to the engineering papers, and was regarded as an authority on railway questions. Tho late Mr. lions-Marten was a follow of the Royal Geographical Sncioty, and also of tho Royal Meteorological, Society. The "transactions" of these societies havo received a number of valuable contributions from his pen. Ho married Miss Emily Hicksou. of ; iVollington, and his wife survives, him, Thero were no children of tho marriage.
