HUTT WATER SUPPLY.

— ■ THE -NEW INSTALLATION DESCRIBED. Tho -now water' supply for tho Hutt Borough, the works in connection' with which wero begun ,just over - twelve ■ months ago, and havo now been completed,. wilL be tunied on for the first time to-day. The scheme, which . was inaugurated, during Captain M'Donald's tohn of office .as Mayor, provided for 2000 feet of 10-inch piping;' 12,000 feet,of 7-inch.2ooo feet of-6-inch; 8000 feet of 5-inCh'; 10,000 of 4-inch; -and 92,400, feet of. 3-inch piping,, with- the necessary; angles,, bopds, junctions, and fire, hydrants at fourchain intervals. "The pipes are'of'steel, 'arid in 40-feet sections; an advantage in localities subject to earthquakes. . ;.. THE RESERVOIR. -i' The water' supplv'.is obtained from ten 3-inch • artesian well ■ pipes^discharging into a receiving tank, from which" tho water may either bo pumped' into , the 1 reservoir or into tho mains'. ' ' ■ , - . < ;■ The reservoir itself is 'striated near the rosideiico of '• Professor Yon Zedlitz, arid tho 'flow is. 110; feet above the level' of tho' Hutt River Bridge. It is 100 feet-in diiiincter, and is., constructed in re-inforced . concrete, with a concrete roof, its storago capacity being approximately 1,000,000 ' gallons. , The pressure, for domestic purposes, is 501bs. to the square inch. - In tlio everiti of'a' s.e'rious: out-break-,of fire,- however, tho. water can .be pumped into the. mains, giving, a .'pressure, it, is stated, unequalled iri tho country. ; ' :' ; THE PUMPING STATION.' ;• - The pumping station' is •' constructed of ferro-ooncretej and equipped;.with two 70-h. : p. ' Fiolding and Piatt' gas-producers, ' arid two Merryweathor'3-throw Hatfield pumps, each with a capacity, of 750 gallons per, minutes, against of 120 feet, or .'a pressure of 400 gallons per miriuto against a head of 200 feet. The various : parts of tho giant are'in duplicate. Tho: present • population of _, the Hutt 'is 3500, V and''.a 1 ; supply of water 'has been provided 'sufficiont for'4o,ooo people on a basis of !1 25 gallon's''p.er;head'per'day. The wells were sunk 'by Mr.'' works, and the erection'of the''engines was carried out . by Messrs.
