Nelson, February 14. ■ Tho,inquest on tli6' Appleby Coach ,way fatality on February 1 was. resumed today, when tho Railway Department, Newman Bros, (coach proprietors), Charles' Brickland (coach driver), and relatives of Miss Fittall (one of tho injured passengers) wero represented by counsel. Evidence was given by tho railway officials, who stated that they saw the coach approaching the line, and concluded that tho driver had seen the train. Immediately a collision seemed likely the brakes were applied. Other witnesses stated that tho crossing was an opon one, with nothing to impede the view from tho bos of a coach. ' :i ■ " . Yesterday's mail train for the north on the Manawatu line ran into a oow a short distance beyond Manakau station. The front, bogie wheels of the engine left the rails, but were replaced without injury, and tho train reached Palmerston North half an hour lato.
