THE MAYORALTY.

Sir,—A reply to Citizen " in ,your issue of this morning need bo but brief. The reason so little interest is,taken.in looking out for another Mayor is'a sure indication that the lovcl-he'aded citizens are so well satisfied with the splendid ,work and brilliant abilities brought to bear by the present holder of the three long years in connection with'.tho city improvements is ample to justify us in retaining''those'services as long as he is willing, to devote them. Annual changes of such office is, all very well for small boroughs where tho Mayor has merely, to sig;i a few documents now'arid then. liut in this city-i many can hardly realise the amount of work performed by our Mayor. Here wo have suburban boroughs flocking in eager to sharo the benefits of tho capital city, and very largo undertakings are being onterdd upon. The changing of Mayors frequently would not bo wise. It takes one tho best part, of ..Bis .first year to becomo acf|uaintcd with the duties devolving upon him. There is no sound sense in "Citizen s" remark where 'he says, " The Council's influence would be enhanced by a change of chairman. The city would be better for less Mayor and moro Council in the ordering of things." Is it not a fact, whonever there is anything to complain about, which is within the province of the Council,' it is the Mayor who is spotted to heap tho blamo upon, and not tlie Council as a whole ? 'Solid proof that tho Mayor is expected to know everything and be very careful that nothing goes wrong. —-I am, etc., ' ' ' E B February 7, 1908. ■' '
