BOARD SCHOLARSHIPS.

• ; The , undermentioned candidates have qualified cither for Senior: Board scholarships or Senior free places. ' It'is not yet'certain how many scholarships will' be .warded.- The amount at the . disposal of the . Education Board for the Senior Board scholarships is £200. The annual value of the "scholarship is '£5; or. ,£lO if tho holder is obliged: to live away from home, to prosecute his or -her studies. Successful candidates may- elect to go 'to-"a particular school; and the number of scholarships, depends to n certain • extent on what the choice of the leading candidates may be. "£lO may bo -taken - -up by one candidate alone, "or may be spread over - as, eight candidates.' ~ All-' the: candidates.; have qualified for. Senior free places. , '-The Syllabus of the examination is- : that presented for tho Civil Service Junior Examination. There were in all, 67 candidates. Of these, three . were absent, ■ seven failed • to. qualify, and the remainder, 57, passed—a very good result. The compuls'Dry subjects were composition, English, and arithmetic; and, practically spcakihg, three - others had to bo, taken. Twenty-five candidates selected geography; seven took magnetism and electricity; four'chose hoat'and light ; chemistry attracted fl; -physics,. '4; physical measurements, -8; mathematics, ,'57; Latin, 41); French, -t-; bookkeeping, 7; and drawing, 4. An 1 important point of interest in .connection with the lists ■'hereunder may be noted in the fact that the district high schools have more than held their own with secondary colleges. .When the district ; high schools were first established it was considered by some that tho quality- of the instruction offered by such institutions would not be of such a high standard as that of the regular secondary colleges) It will l lie seen, however, that out of the first ■ten candidates, no less than seven aro from district high schools, a result which is sufficient refutation of the contention referred to.
